Our estate vineyards were started in 2002 in Clements off of East Liberty where the heart of wine country is located. Roughly a quarter of the worlds grapes come from this region and for years our grapes were purchased and made into wine in Napa County. This region has a classic Mediterranean climate with warm days and cool nights due to our delta breezes.
With a rich family farming background we are blessed to be 7th generation California Farmers and Ranchers. Our ancestors date back to early California Pioneers, Rebecca and Samuel Kyburz. Throughout the generations many crops and livestock have been raised. Owner, Herb Garms, started as a young kid in the bay area working with his grandfather at Burgermeister Brewery, managed and harvested thousands of acres of hay grass during his 20s as well as ran livestock in Nevada. Eventually settling in Sloughhouse as pilot, business owner and husband to Ouida Mosher Garms who owns and manages property for livestock and crop production in Sacramento County. Their children and now business partners, Jackie Hanford and Caitlin Smith, were both raised doing 4H and FFA but now own and manage our estate vineyard together. Jackie and Preston Hanford have been philanthropic sponsors in the Elk Grove Community with continuous support of Elk Grove Foundation, Elk Grove FFA and Sacramento County Fair. Caitlin and Paul Smith are both graduates of California Polytechnic State University from the college of Agriculture with degrees in Agricultural Business and Agricultural Systems Management, respectively. Paul Smith work drives him to be apart of a leading agriculture development company who is helping California farmers reduce water usage while farmers see production beginning sooner. Caitlin and Paul Smith live at the vineyard and manage daily cultural practices to ensure sustainability and land stewardship through best practices acquired from interaction with many statewide vineyard and farming operations. The ultimate vineyard to bottle, Caitlin also has become the leading wine maker for Hilcrest.
